Introduction

Trout culture is becoming a popular mode of earning in the mountainous regions of Pakistan. The first trout hatchery of Indian Sub-continent was established in 1928 at Shino-Kaghan, followed by couple of more hatcheries in KPK and GB during the 1960s. Subsequently, many trout hatcheries were established in the private sector for commercial sale of fry and fingerlings and for in-house consumption. Trout fish is mainly cultured in flow-through concrete raceways constructed at places where sufficient water is available throughout the year. Despite suitable agro-climatic conditions trout production in Pakistan has never been close to the regional countries with similar resources e.g. Iran and Turkey. The small volume production is mainly be consumed by tourists at the farm gate. Trout culture however, witnessed a turn-around during 2012-13 when the first local extruded floating feed was produced. This led to decrease in mortality, short culture period, and predictable harvest and secure returns for the farmers. From couple of dozen trout farms at the close of first decade of millennium to the establishment of at least couple of hundreds by the end of 2020s testifies to the potential of trout production in Pakistan. The proactive role of government in creating production infrastructure recently and historically in the breeding segments has been noteworthy. The sustainable growth in trout production needs continuous de-constraining of the inputs supply and infrastructure and adoption of modern technologies in breeding and rearing, biosafety and disease control and the capacity building of extension staff and the farmers.

The specific objectives of the project are:

  • Enhance capacity for quality trout seed production through infrastructure development.
  • Support for establishment of trout farms in private sector.
  • Promote cage culture technology.
  • Value chain development
  • Training & Capacity Building of Public/ Private sector.
  • Improved Government service delivery to promote farming.

Renovation of hatcheries of AJK

It is 75km from Muzaffarabad on the Jagran Stream; this unit was established in 1982 at 1560m with the help of funding project Cold Water Fish Culture. Water is supplied from the Jagran Stream via a 500m pipeline. The water is often turbid, and has a temperature ranging from 18°C in summer to 7–9 °C in winter. It has the capacity of fingerling production 10000-15000 while it can rare 1000 brooders. With the help of this project, kutton hatchery became functional for the first time after its construction.

Maintenance of Kutton trout hatchery after its renovation has been done by providing gradually feed throughout the year, medicines and chemicals in time of disease outburst, fulfilling hatchery breeding demands, in time stocking for next year increase in production rate of trout. Skilled staff through training opportunities lessen mortality rates in hatcheries it ultimately led to difference in basic production level. This year of trout seed production in kutton hatchery accounts for 6000 eggs and 2000 fry.
